Michel Couvreur Cap à Pie Blended Whisky – A Malt-Rich French Whisky
Cap à Pie is a blended whisky created by Michel Couvreur, a house based in Bouze-lès-Beaune, Burgundy. First released in 2018, it follows the general recipe of The Unique but contains a higher proportion of malt whiskies, giving the blend greater aromatic complexity while retaining freshness and drinkability.
The blend combines grain and malt whiskies, each matured in different types of casks. The grain component is aged in casks that previously held whisky, while the malt whiskies mature in sherry casks, including Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso. This approach reflects the importance Michel Couvreur places on cask ageing and on the way wood influences the final character of a whisky.
The whisky has an amber colour. On the nose, slightly iodine-like notes combine with fresh almond, delicate floral aromas and hints of white fruit. The palate is lively at first, then develops a rounded texture. Vanilla brings a gentle sweetness, while the sherry influence adds depth and a subtle wine-like character. The finish is marked by toasted notes and a lingering malt profile.
Bottled at 45% ABV in a 70 cl format, Cap à Pie can be enjoyed as an aperitif, served cool as recommended by the producer. It can also be used in a short cocktail such as the Robb Brow, with a small measure of vermouth. Its combination of malt richness, freshness and sherry-cask influence makes it an interesting choice for drinkers who want to explore a blend with a distinctive maturation approach.
Description
Cap à Pie by Michel Couvreur – A Blend Shaped by Sherry Cask Maturation
Michel Couvreur’s Cap à Pie is a blended whisky first released in 2018. Based on the house’s The Unique recipe, it uses a greater proportion of malt whiskies to create a more complex flavour profile while maintaining freshness and a rounded character. The result is an assemblage of grain and malt whiskies with a clear emphasis on the influence of cask maturation.
The different components are aged separately. The grain whiskies mature in casks that previously held whisky, while the malt whiskies are aged in sherry casks, including Pedro Ximénez and Oloroso. These casks contribute complementary characteristics: the whisky casks help retain the grain spirit’s own profile, while the sherry casks bring additional fruit, wine-like and toasted notes to the malt component. The blend is then brought together to create a balanced final whisky.
Cap à Pie has an amber colour. Its nose is lightly iodine-like, with fresh almond, delicate floral notes and hints of white fruit. The palate starts with a lively impression before becoming rounder and smoother. Vanilla adds a gentle sweetness, while the sherry influence brings depth and a subtle richness. Toasted notes and malt character remain in the finish, giving the whisky a persistent and distinctive profile.
Bottled at 45% ABV in a 70 cl bottle, Cap à Pie is intended in particular for aperitif drinking. Michel Couvreur recommends serving it cool. It can also be used in a short cocktail such as the Robb Brow, which combines whisky with a small amount of vermouth.
Cap à Pie is suited to enthusiasts who appreciate blended whiskies with a carefully considered maturation strategy. Its combination of grain and malt, together with the use of different cask types, makes it a distinctive expression within the Michel Couvreur range.
