Hailing from Chile, the Aromo Barrel Selection 2020 is a characterful red wine produced by Viña Aromo in the Maule Valley. This blended wine combines three complementary grape varieties: 80 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon, 15 per cent Carménère and 5 per cent Petit Verdot. Its 14-month ageing in French oak barrels lends it depth and complexity. The nose reveals aromas of black fruits, blackcurrant and spices, accompanied by notes of tobacco, smoke and vanilla. On the palate, its generous structure and firm tannins are complemented by a lovely lingering finish.
Description
The Aromo Barrel Selection 2020 hails from the Maule Valley, at the heart of Chile’s wine-growing region. This cuvée from Viña Aromo showcases the estate’s expertise in crafting blended wines with complex aromatic profiles. Its blend comprises 80 per cent Cabernet Sauvignon, 15 per cent Carménère and 5 per cent Petit Verdot – three grape varieties that combine power, rich fruitiness and tannic structure.
Winemaking begins with a careful selection of the grapes, which are harvested by hand and then chilled before processing. Pre-fermentation maceration allows the aromatic compounds to be gradually extracted, followed by fermentation at a controlled temperature. The wine is transferred to barrels, notably during malolactic fermentation. It is then aged for 14 months in French oak barrels of varying ages, to achieve a balance between the aromas of the grapes and those of the wood.
In the glass, its deep colour with purplish highlights hints at a concentrated wine. The bouquet combines blackcurrant, dark fruits and dried herbs, with hints of cigar box, smoke and vanilla. On the palate, it is well-structured, supported by firm yet well-integrated tannins. Woody and spicy notes accompany the fruit through to a lingering finish, characterised by cedar and roasted notes.
At the table, this red pairs particularly well with a rib of beef, duck breast, a rack of lamb or herb-grilled meat. It is also well-suited to flavourful stews and mature cheeses. Serving at a temperature of between 16 and 18 °C allows you to appreciate its balance. An ideal wine for lovers of expressive Chilean reds that are both powerful and complex.
