Joseph Drouhin’s Savigny-lès-Beaune Clos des Godeaux 2023 is a Burgundy red wine made from 100 per cent Pinot Noir. Situated at an altitude of 360 metres, this south-facing vineyard rests on Bathonian limestone marl. The wine captivates with its ruby colour and elegant nose of red berries, flowers and spices. On the palate, notes of blackcurrant and raspberry come through with finesse, supported by silky tannins and a supple texture. A refined and well-balanced Savigny-lès-Beaune.
Description
The Savigny-lès-Beaune Clos des Godeaux 2023 from Maison Joseph Drouhin is a Burgundy red wine that elegantly showcases the character of Pinot Noir from the Côte de Beaune. The Savigny-lès-Beaune appellation is situated to the north of Beaune, in a small valley through which the Rhoin river flows. The Clos des Godeaux enjoys a south-facing aspect at an altitude of around 360 metres, close to the Premier Cru Lavières. Its soil, composed of light, Bathonian limestone marl rich in small, angular pebbles, contributes to the wine’s finesse and freshness.
Made exclusively from Pinot Noir, this 2023 vintage benefits from a particularly high-quality year in Burgundy. Joseph Drouhin describes 2023 as a generous vintage, offering the Pinot Noir grapes excellent ripeness as well as fruity, smooth and complex expressions.
On tasting, the 2023 Clos des Godeaux displays a lovely ruby colour. The nose is elegant, with aromas of red berries, floral notes reminiscent of roses in particular, and delicate spicy hints. On the palate, blackcurrant and raspberry come through subtly, accompanied by a spicy undertone. The texture remains supple and the silky tannins lend a lovely finesse.
The winemaking process involves fermentation and maceration for two to three weeks in small open vats, using indigenous yeasts, with regular punching down and pumping over. The wine is then aged for 14 to 16 months in French oak barrels, with 20 to 25 per cent new oak.
Served at around 16 °C, this Savigny-lès-Beaune pairs well with coq au vin, roast poultry, rabbit in sauce, veal or certain cheeses. Joseph Drouhin recommends drinking this wine between 8 and 15 years after bottling, with ageing potential of up to 20 years.
