The Grape Escape of Beaujolais Nouveau

Savory Traditions at Calais Vins

Jérôme Pont from Calais Vins shares the allure of Beaujolais Nouveau: "Here, it’s not just about friends and charcuterie. Our Beaujolais Nouveau is exquisite too." For Calais Vins, offering Beaujolais Nouveau means choosing wines that mature elegantly, sipped without hesitation the following year. By February's end, the 'Nouveau' tag fades; Calais Vins favors wines with extended maceration. Why? Because, for us, it's the visitor experience that reigns supreme, giving birth to the Grape Escape concept.

Rich Tales of Beaujolais Nouveau 2023

Around his tasting bar, Jérôme Pont, a seasoned connoisseur, paints vivid stories of Beaujolais Nouveau. "This appellation traces back to a decree dated March 11, 1951. Wines from that year's harvest were restrained until December 15, 1951. A revolution ensued among Beaujolais winemakers to preserve this tradition." Unlike the British, the French, renowned for their passion, uphold their heritage. A practice of selling Beaujolais wines 'under the press' persisted since the 19th century. Paris and Lyon's bistros and cafes thrived on it. During transit, the wines fermented, guarding against any spoilage. Pressured by winemakers, the decree was nullified. In 1967, the third Thursday of November at midnight became the official release time for Beaujolais Nouveau. This French tradition unites revelers and aficionados, offering a taste of the Beaujolais with its distinguished origin - Beaujolais and Beaujolais Village. Cultivated exclusively from the Gamay Noir grape, it stretches from the North of Lyon to the South of Mâcon.

The Essence of a Fine Beaujolais Nouveau

What distinguishes a quality Beaujolais Nouveau? Its vibrant, fruity aroma and lively essence. These wines undergo a shorter maceration period, a maximum of 10 days. Only 50% of Beaujolais production bears the 'Beaujolais Nouveau' label. The flavor, reminiscent of English candies and banana, courtesy of an ester, isoamyl acetate, is now evolving toward red fruit notes, aligning with the traditional Beaujolais wines. This year, Calais Vins proudly presents Domaine de l'Estrange's Beaujolais Nouveau. To discern whether it leans toward English candy or red fruit, a Calais
