Description
Abuelo Rum from Panama
The Abuelo rum distillery was founded in Pesé, Panama, in 1908 by Spanish immigrant Don José Varela Blanco. The distillery is still run by the Varela family, now in its third generation. Abuelo is one of the few producers to own its own sugar cane plantations, with over 1,200 hectares in the Pesé Valley. This allows them to control every stage of production, right up to bottling.
Abuelo 15 Year Old Sherry Oloroso
The "Sherry Oloroso" finish means that Abuelo rum is aged in particularly fragrant sherry casks. In this 15-year-old version, the rum is aged for 14 years in American white oak casks that previously contained bourbon, before spending its final year of maturation in sherry casks.
Let's move on to the tasting:
Appearance: a deep amber colour.
On the nose: Abuelo 15 Year Old reveals powerful aromas of nuts (mainly walnuts).
On the palate: the Sherry Oloroso finish reveals flavours of dried figs and raisins, with a lovely long finish.
