Sauternes

Sauternes wines are sweet wines from the Bordeaux region. They are made from grapes affected by "noble rot," or Botrytis cinerea. This fungus, which coats the grape berries, concentrates the grapes' sugars and aromas, resulting in wines of great richness and complexity.

Sauternes wines are primarily made from three grape varieties: Sémillon, Sauvignon Blanc, and Muscadelle.

Sémillon, which often dominates blends, brings richness, complexity, and notes of honey, candied fruit, and white flowers.

Sauvignon Blanc, on the other hand, contributes freshness and liveliness to the wines, with aromas of citrus and exotic fruits.

Muscadelle, used in smaller quantities, adds floral notes and roundness.

These wines are distinguished by their golden color, smoothness, and rich and varied aromatic palette, ranging from candied fruit to notes of honey, white flowers, and spices. On the palate, they are balanced, with acidity that offsets the sweetness, offering a long, lingering finish.

What to pair with Sauternes?

Sauternes wines are perfect with desserts, blue cheeses, foie gras, and spicy dishes, offering an unforgettable taste experience.

Sauternes wines, renowned for their exceptional quality, include several Grands Crus Classés. The 1855 classification, established at the request of Emperor Napoleon III, divides Sauternes wines into three categories: Premier Cru Supérieur, Premiers Crus, and Deuxièmes Crus.
