42 litres of beer : what the UK allowance actually means in cans, bottles and pints
GOV.UK confirms the UK beer allowance reaches 42 litres per person when entering Great Britain from outside the UK. That number can feel abstract. So let's put it in terms every British beer buyer actually uses.
42 litres translated : pints, cans and bottles
A UK pint measures 568 ml. At that volume, 42 litres equals approximately 74 pints — almost 74 rounds at the local. That is more than most people expect.
Prefer bottles or cans ? The table below shows exactly what 42 litres looks like across the most common beer formats.
| Format | Volume per unit | Units in 42 litres | Equivalent in crates / packs |
| UK pint can | 568 ml | ~74 cans | 3 crates of 24 (approx.) |
| Standard bottle | 330 ml | ~127 bottles | ~5 crates of 24 |
| Standard can | 440 ml | ~95 cans | ~4 packs of 24 |
| Large can | 500 ml | 84 cans | 3.5 packs of 24 |
The British Airways High Life Shop (Tourvest Retail Services) confirms the 568 ml pint-can equivalence : the 42-litre beer allowance equates to three full crates of pint cans. For 330 ml bottles, that rises to five crates.
Is 42 litres a lot of beer ?
In short : yes. The UK beer allowance in pints works out to roughly 74 pub-sized servings per person. For a household of two adults returning together, that is 148 pints total — two separate allowances, each 42 litres, transported by two individuals.
"The frantic quest for unlimited amounts of alcohol has never been our niche. We are a shop built by French people for French people, but where the British are very welcome." — Jérôme Pont, Calais Vins

Per-person rule : no combining allowances
GOV.UK states that personal allowances cannot be combined with another traveller's quota. Each adult carries their own 42 litres. You cannot pool allowances to bring back 84 litres under one person's name.
Under-17s : no beer allowance
GOV.UK confirms there is no personal beer allowance for travellers under 17. Any beer brought in by under-17s must be declared at the border before arrival in the UK.
- Each adult traveller holds an individual 42-litre beer allowance (GOV.UK).
- Allowances are non-transferable between travellers.
- Under-17s have no personal beer allowance and must declare any beer at the border.
Planning your beer shopping trip from France becomes straightforward once you know your figures. A solo traveller filling their 330 ml bottle allowance leaves with ~127 bottles. Two adults travelling together take home up to ~254 bottles combined — each carrying their own allocation. If you want to know exactly which bottles to fill those wine bottle allowance from France with, Jérôme and Olivier have already made the selection for you. The next chapter covers exactly what the rules say about bringing beer back from France since Brexit, and one saving most travellers never hear about.
Beer allowance from France to the UK after Brexit : what has changed and what to know at customs
Since 1 January 2021, fixed personal allowances apply to all travellers entering Great Britain from France. GOV.UK sets the full alcohol allowance as follows.
The complete UK alcohol allowance at a glance
| Category | Allowance |
| Beer | 42 litres |
| Still wine | 18 litres |
| Spirits and liquors above 22% ABV | 4 litres |
| Sparkling wine, fortified wine, cider and drinks up to 22% ABV | 9 litres |
| Other goods (souvenirs, gifts, etc.) | Up to £390 (£270 by private plane or boat) |
GOV.UK confirms the spirits and lower-ABV allowance is splittable. For example, 2 litres of spirits and 4.5 litres of fortified wine both sit within the legal limits — each at half their respective allowance.
What happens if you go over your beer import allowance ?
GOV.UK states that exceeding any single category requires a full declaration of all goods in that category — not just the amount above the limit. Duty is then payable on the entire quantity. Undeclared goods are liable to seizure.
The process applies whether you cross by Eurotunnel from Folkestone or by ferry with P&O or DFDS. If you travel by motorhome, there is a dedicated free overnight stop in Calais, five minutes from the port, with water and free parking.
- Declare goods online before travel or at the border on arrival.
- Pay tax and duty on all goods in the exceeded category — not the excess alone.
- Undeclared goods may be seized (GOV.UK).
Northern Ireland : different rules apply
Travellers arriving in Northern Ireland from the European Union face a different set of customs rules. HMRC publishes the applicable Northern Ireland allowances at gov.uk — check before you travel if your route takes you there.
A saving most booze cruise guides never mention : VAT refund at Calais Vins
The beer import allowance covers duty and excise. French VAT, however, is a separate matter — and one that works in your favour.
"There is around 15 percent VAT that can be reclaimed on purchases from Calais Vins. We forged these partnerships to enable our customers to reclaim VAT upon boarding at the Eurotunnel and ferry terminals in Calais." — Jérôme Pont, Calais Vins
Calais Vins operates a partnership with Global Blue and Skiptax that refunds approximately 15% VAT on eligible purchases. Two methods are available.
- Global Blue : collect a Tax Free form in-store. At the Calais ferry port, scan the barcode at the PABLO terminal kiosks in the main building after customs. At Eurotunnel, use the kiosk in the passenger building.
- Skiptax : download the free app and scan your passport. After shopping, scan your receipt. Scan the barcode generated by the app at the departure terminal. Skiptax processes the refund within 48 hours.
No competitor duty-free guide available covers this saving. It applies to purchases made at Calais Vins (Rue Gutenberg, 62100 Calais) and brings the real price of beer in Calais noticeably below UK retail — before you even factor in the lower base price of beer in France. The next chapter shows exactly what that saving looks like in practice, and what to put in your crates.
Maximise your beer allowance in Calais : craft beers, Belgian ales, kegs and unbeatable prices
Beer is cheaper in France than in the UK for a structural reason : French excise duty on beer sits well below British rates. Add the ~15% VAT refund via Global Blue or Skiptax, and the price gap becomes hard to ignore. Calais Vins stocks over 4,000 references available for online pre-order at wine-calais.co.uk — beer, wine, champagne and spirits, ready to collect when you cross.
Belgian ales : the selection you won't find on a UK supermarket shelf
Belgian beer is cheaper in France than across the Channel. Calais Vins and Olivier Vins carry the full range of abbey and Trappist ales that British retailers stock only partially, often at a premium.
- Chimay — Trappist, three variants (Red, Blue, White)
- Duvel — Belgian golden strong ale, 8.5% ABV
- Westmalle — Trappist Tripel and Dubbel
- Tripel Karmeliet — three-grain Belgian tripel
- Delirium Tremens — golden ale, 8.5% ABV
- Kwak — amber ale served in its iconic coach-glass bottle
- Leffe — abbey blonde and brown, priced below UK retail
Local craft breweries : Nord-Pas-de-Calais exclusives
This is where Calais beer deals go beyond what any duty-free shop on a ferry can match. The breweries below produce beers unavailable in the UK. Our team stocks them because our British customers ask for them — and keep coming back.
| Brewery | Town | Flagship beers |
| Brasserie 3 Monts | Saint-Sylvestre-Cappel | 3 Monts (golden bière de garde) |
| Brasserie du Détroit | Calais | L'Ascette |
| Brasserie Goudale | Arques | Goudale, Triple Moine, Raoul, Belzebuth |
| Brasserie Thiriez | Esquelbecq | Blonde d'Esquelbecq, Maline, Rouge Flamande |

Our English-speaking sommeliers at both shops advise on food-and-beer pairings for every style — from the floral bitterness of a Blonde d'Esquelbecq with a cheese board to the roasted depth of a Bastion 14 with charcuterie.
PerfectDraft and Blade kegs : a saving no ferry shop mentions
Here is the angle that no DFDS Duty Free guide or British Airways High Life page covers.
PerfectDraft kegs sold in France carry a price noticeably below UK retail, and the same applies to Blade kegs. For a full breakdown of prices and available references, read our dedicated guide to buying PerfectDraft kegs in France.
. Both count against your 42-litre beer allowance — a standard PerfectDraft keg holds 6 litres, a Blade keg 8 litres. Fill the rest of your allowance with bottles or cans and you still stay well within the limit.
- PerfectDraft 6 L keg : counts as 6 litres of your 42-litre beer allowance.
- Blade 8 L keg : counts as 8 litres of your 42-litre beer allowance.
- Remaining allowance after one Blade keg : 34 litres — room for ~103 × 330 ml bottles.
