A Cognac XO is a Cognac that has spent at least 6 years in barrels

The barrel must be new or have contained only cognac, from April 1 following the harvest. Note that the cellar should only house cognacs with no other exception. A Cognac XO develops a great complexity of aromas (prune, tobacco, leather, vanilla) all carried by a perfect balance between liveliness, freshness and wood. The barrels generally come from Limousin or the forest of Troncais.

It should be noted that from 2018 the XOs must have spent 10 years in oak barrels and this will validate an unofficial use which wanted a Napoleon to be considered as an intermediate aging between the VSOP and the XO.

A Cognac Hors d'Âge is supposed to rub shoulders with 12 to 15 years of aging.
