Octomore Whiskey

Whiskey Octomore Islay, a very peaty whiskey

It is in response to Bruichladdich's detractors who criticized these Islay whiskeys for not being peated, but also out of a desire to clear new ground, that Jim McEwan created the Octomore single malt range. These whiskeys are distilled at Bruichladich on Ilslay and boast the title of the most peaty whiskeys in the world. The unit of measurement for peat is expressed in ppm (parts per million) of phenols, resulting from the oily smoke deposited on the barley grains during malting. A traditionally peated Islay single malt turns between 40 and 50 ppm. The Octomore whiskeys over their versions have bpassed from 131 ppm to 258 ppm for version 6.3. Beyond the technical performance there remains of course a super powerful whiskey and at the same time a powerful, fatty, excessive but very fine whiskey. The use of very thin Bruichladdich stills has something to do with this. Octomore is an iron fist in a velvet glove.

Whiskey Octomore a very special nomenclature

The figures on the versions give indications. The first number indicates the batch (the cuvée) and the second number indicates the aging method. 1 for 100% was bourbon, 2 for the use of different casks and 3 for the use of barley from the Isle of Islay. The rest of the nomenclature remains to be written.

Octomore owes its name to an old farm distillery located above Port Charlotte which operated from 1812 to 1852.
