Natural Sweet Wines

Natural sweet wine (Vins Doux naturels)

It is a wine in which a neutral alcohol has been added (generally a brandy from wines of the same geographical origin) which has the effect of stopping the alcoholic fermentation in progress. This wine obtained by mutage has retained residual sugar which gives it sweetness and fruity. The wine is said to be "sweet" and "natural" because the sugar gives the sweetness, and the sugar is naturally contained in the fruit.

The most common natural sweet wines in France are:

Muscat de Rivesaltes, Muscat de Frontignan, Maury and the Banyuls

who come from Languedoc and Roussillon.

The Côtes du Rhône offer

Muscat de Beaume de Venise, Rasteau

Corsica offers the

Muscat Corsica

Unlike natural sweet wines, Vins de Liqueurs or Mistelles are the result of a blend of unfermented must and alcohol.
