Bordeaux White Wines

The Bordeaux vineyard is best known for its red wines. The period of sale by the châteaux of the Grands Crus of Bordeaux, Médoc or St Emilion, en Primeur (in France and around the world) occupies center stage in wine news. Some great white wines from Pessac Léognan, Sauternes and Barsac take part in the Futures campaign.
But of course there is not only red wine in Bordeaux. Estates in Bordeaux produce terrific dry or sweet white wines and also a lovely Crémant de Bordeaux. Since 1977, a decree has governed the production of dry Bordeaux wine. The Bordeaux appellation sells around 850 million bottles a year, and 14% are white wines. We're still talking about 115 million bottles of white wine from the Bordeaux region.

As with red wines, white Bordeaux wines are above all blended wines made from several grape varieties.

The grape varieties authorized to make a white Bordeaux wine, whether dry or sweet are:

Muscadelle, Sauvignon, Sémillon and to a lesser extent Ugni Blanc and Colombard. Vinification will determine whether the wine will be dry or sweet.

The appellations (AOC) of Bordeaux white wines are:

AOC dry white wines from Bordeaux:

White Bordeaux, Dry Superior Bordeaux, Graves, Pessac-Léognan, Entre-deux-mers, Entre-deux-mers Haut-Benauge, Graves de Vayres, Sainte-Foy-Bordeaux, Blaye-Côtes de Bordeaux, Francs-Côtes de Bordeaux, Côtes de Bourg, Vin de Pays from the Atlantic IGP

Sweet white Bordeaux wines:

The sweet and syrupy wines of Bordeaux flourish along the Garonne. temperature variations are more controlled there and the ambient humidity favors the development of Botrytis Cinerea. The three grape varieties that are Muscadelle, Sauvignon and Sémillon are used will be different combinations. The result is this inimitable sweet white wine with a golden color and a nose marked by notes of exotic fruits, honey and citrus. the palate is ample, long and generous.

Dry white Bordeaux wines :

It is on dry white Bordeaux that the influence of the terroir is even more important. the right bank offers clay-limestone and clay-sandy soils, while the left bank offers gravelly, more mineral soils. Mostly made from Sauvignon, you will find dry white wines with a crystalline color, fruity, lively, with aromas of citrus fruits and flowers.
