Bunnahabhain

Whiskey Bunnahabhain a distillery north-east of Islay

The Bunnahabhain Distillery was built in 1881 the same year as Bruichladdich in northeast Islay. The architecture of the distillery is inspired by Bordeaux châteaux.

Bunnahabhain a whiskey in unpeated water

The name Bunnahabhain means in Gaelic more or less "Mouth". Indeed "Bunnah" is placed at the mouth of the Margadale river. Unlike most rivers in Islay, the waters of the Margadale run on a link of stones and not peat. Therefore it is absolutely not peaty water that is used to make Bunnahabhain whiskey. The classic Bunnahabhain in 12 years version is an oily single malt, powerful barely peated (we are all the same on Islay ... ) evoking notes of leather, oak, dried fruits and malt. The range has been enriched with an 18 year old, a 25 year old and a smoked and vegetable version, "Toiteach" which means "Smoked" in Gaelic and "Céobanach" the most peaty version. Bunnahbhain malt is one of the major components of the famous Black Bottle, a blend of malts from different distilleries from Islay or Port Askaig.
